I’m NOT a photographer. I usually take my photos

I’m NOT a photographer. I usually take my photos quickly on my cell phone with one hand as my 3 dogs tug my other hand simultaneously in 3 different directions. Plus I know nothing whatsoever about the technical aspects of photography.

And yet, it amuses me greatly to take photos. And it amuses me even more to come back to my house and play with the photos I’ve taken.

I tilt and crop and apply filters, change tints, increase contrast, brightness, saturation and all the other things that Apple makes so easy, until I get a visual result I enjoy. Or I get to a less than perfect visual result but nevertheless still have an image that manages to convey the essence of an experience better than any words I could cobble together.

I enjoy not having the pressure of BEING “a photographer”. I am just BEING someone who’s doing something I love.

The truth is you don’t have to BE anything. You just get to do want you want. You don’t have to be trained or expert or educated or qualified or graduated or certified or schooled or more knowledgeable than everyone else to do something, to do it well, to have fun with it, perhaps even make it what you do all day.

Any rules about such things are just ideas repeated over and over by a subset of people until enough other people begin to believe that those ideas are requirements.

If there’s something you truly desire to do, consider that maybe - just maybe - all those barriers that you’ve been telling yourself prevent you from doing what you want to do aren’t barriers at all.
